What is the SR-22?

An SR-22 is not insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the California DMV confirming you carry the state's minimum required coverage. The DMV requires it after license suspension from DUI, uninsured accident, or other serious violations.

We handle everything: quote the policy, issue the certificate and file it electronically with the DMV that same day.

Frequently asked questions about SR-22

How long is the SR-22 requirement?
In California, typically 3 continuous years from the date of the violation or suspension. If the policy lapses during that period, the clock may restart.
What happens if my insurance is canceled?
The insurer notifies the DMV automatically with an SR-26 (cancellation form). The DMV may re-suspend your license. That is why keeping the policy active for the full required period is critical.
Can I get SR-22 without owning a car?
Yes. It's called a 'non-owner SR-22'. It covers you when driving vehicles you don't own (borrowed, rented). It's cheaper than a standard policy and still satisfies the DMV requirement.
Does SR-22 affect my credit score?
Not directly. The SR-22 itself does not appear on your credit report. However, the underlying violation may increase your premium because insurers review your driving record.
Do I need SR-22 if I move to another state?
If California ordered the SR-22, you still need it even after moving. You must notify the California DMV and ensure your new insurer can also file in California for the duration of the requirement.
What is an FR-44? Do I need it in California?
FR-44 is similar to SR-22 but used in Florida and Virginia. It requires higher coverage limits. California does not use FR-44 — the SR-22 is the equivalent here.
